I didn't think we'd have to bring back event recommendations until deep in February, but apparently, January is all but dry this year. And it's not just Vinterjazz events either!
The most interesting gig this Friday, the 24th, happens to take place on the other side of the strait. Inkonst is hosting the release party for Elusive Shimmer, the debut album by Swedish electroacoustic composer Erik Klinga, whom we had the opportunity to see at the Organ Sound Art Festival in December. Also performing will be Polish composer Aleksandra Słyż, who has just released her excellent new live album Tonarium Live.
On Saturday, January 25th, Svendborg's DJ crew Sekvens is throwing an event at Christianshavn Beboerhuset. Hedo Hydr8 and Muskila will do a b2b with support from Sekvens residents Salti Brothers, Fyns Amt, and Sarahabibi, as well as visuals by Supernihil.
The Other Film Club, Copenhagen's new nomadic film club, is back with a new screening on Monday, January 27 at Husets Biograf. They'll be showing 2023’s Elpis, "a poetic essay film about the effects of the Iran-Iraq war" by Iranian-Irish filmmaker Rouzbeh Rashidi, who will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening.
There’s another interesting screening on Wednesday the 29th at Byens Lys Cinema in Christiania. The Egyptian movie The Land from 1970 will be shown with English subtitles. Doors open at 19:00 and the screening starts at 19:45. As always, the event is free/donation-based, the bar is cash only, and it’s recommended to dress warmly!
On Thursday the 30th, KoncertKirken starts its first weekend series of Vinterjazz events with Lars Bech Pilgaard, Anders Vestergaard & Johanna Borchert, and Ignacio Córdoba & Johanna Borchert. On Friday it's the first edition of HYPNO QLUB with PJ Fossum, Dennis Tuomi, Fredy Clue, and Karolina Palica. Matt Choboter, Nick Martin, and Calum Builder will play on Saturday and Sunday is reserved for Unfolk and Ballads.
As part of Vinterjazz, RMC is hosting two evenings of live performances on Thursday, 30, and Friday, 31. The program starts at 19:00 on both evenings and admission is free. Among the artists performing are Francesca Buratelli, Margos, Ly, Margo Sanda, and others. Also on that Friday, there's an event at Mayhem with Spost, Ghillie, and Ro, as well as Dj Algorythm and Dj Adagio for things.
Saturday, February 1st is packed with events. Starting early, Proton Records will host a release party for Blue Lake's new album from 14:00 to 17:00, including a short performance at 15:00. Over at the Union, Final Descent presents concerts by Copenhagen-based Slovakian musician and composer Michaela Turcerová and Danish musician and producer Anders Bach starting at 19:00. From there it's easy to cross over to ALICE for the first edition of their new club night series, CLUB MALIKA, featuring Le Diouck (live), Prof. Stranger, suziethecockroach and Malika Mahmoud. Tickets for this event will only be sold at the door. If you don't want to spend a whole evening in Nørrebro, check out the Night Journeys event at Huset with Ssaliva and vio lino.
The promoters Lost2Reality are back with a series of live electronic music shows. Their second event in 2025, which takes place on Wednesday, February 5th at Huset, will feature a live performance by the band Mana Pool and a DJ set by the Aarhus project P(h)onycat.
For the second weekend of Vinterjazz events, KoncertKirken kicks things off on Thursday the 6th with a showcase of the new label Initiated Records, which focuses on the fusion of "jazz sounds and musical surrealism" and features performances by Vinnie Who, Ida Duelund, and Oilly Wallace. The second edition of HYPNO CLUB on Friday the 7th presents a strong lineup featuring the Fossum/Can/Nunes collaboration, Irene Bianco, and Jakob Riis. There will also be some events on Saturday and Sunday.
Elsewhere, Jolene focuses on the synthpop sounds of Copenhagen-based feminist music collective and label SØNTH for the latest edition of its Live on the Floor concert series. They're hosting an evening on Thursday the 6th with live performances by Cecilie Penney, ALOO, and In Atlas, followed by a DJ set by Phloem. The entrance is free before 21:00.
On Friday the 7th, Villa Kultur will host its regular "fyraften", which presents performances at the intersection of music, theater, and installation art. This time composer and musician Gintė Preisaitė will perform. Admission is free, and there's a bar serving organic beer and natural wine.
The same Friday, Xiu Xiu will play at Stengade. The show is unfortunately sold out, but you can always try to get on the waiting list or snatch a last-minute resale. Speaking of early 2000s staples, Mogwai are touring in support of their new album and will stop by VEGA also on Feb. 7th.
Finally, on Saturday the 8th, the CRRNT collective takes over Union to present performances by the Italian-Danish duo Blaume, composer and percussionist Greta Eacott, and the CRRNT Ensemble.
